Ever interested with how the Mills Track and Field team does so well? Let’s take a look at the leaders who help keep the team stay on track.
Track and Field has many coaches; Coach Tim Tuff who works with distance runners and hurdlers, Coach Larry Capell who focuses on jumps and sprints, and Coach Johnny Jackson who works with the sprinters.
The coaches’ goal for the season is to be the first school to win all four team titles at the PAL (Peninsula Athletic League) Championships. Head Coach Tuff says, “I also hope to advance several athletes to CCS (Central Coast Section) and State competition. Most importantly, I hope to see all the athletes achieve new personal bests.”
The Track and Field team has been one of the best sports at Mills in the most recent years. Now being considered one of the “power house Track and Field schools in the PAL and the CCS”, many athletes this year, such as Sarah Gayer and Takahiro Mollenkamp are close to beating school records. There have been many successful League Champion alumni from Mills, the recent being Kirk Baril for sprints, Julia Gibbs for throws, and Caroline Trevithick for hurdles.
In Track and Field, while on a team, one does compete alone, requiring a lot of self motivation. If the athlete does not put in the effort than they will not succeed, showing during the meets. “During training, I try to remind the team what we are trying to achieve, as well as remind them how much they are capable of achieving.” Coach Tuff also adds.
Coach Tuff ran Track and Field along with Cross Country for Half Moon Bay High School and The University of Chicago, partaking in the 400 and 800 meter runs. Coach Jackson ran for San Mateo High School, participating in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 4 by 1 race. Coach Capell competed for Humboldt State University as well as the National Championships in the Decathlon as a high jumper, hurdler, triple jumper, and long jumper.
“The track coaches use unique ways to persuade us to try harder. Their encouragement is the reason so many of the Mills track athletes become successful by the end of the season,” says junior, Nicole Tan.
The track team is currently in the beginning of their season, having had their first meet on March 23. The Viking Boys and Girls have been training hard, and have received great guidance and training from their coaches.
