On May 1st, President Donald Trump spoke about introducing another branch of the military called, “Space Force”. “You will be part of the five proud branches of the United States Armed Forces — Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard. And we’re actually thinking of a sixth, and that would be the Space Force,” he stated as he presented the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to Rose Garden’s Army football team. This isn’t the first time he has mentioned this. On March 13th, Trump said, “Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea. We may even have a space force.
President Trump claims that at first the idea was a joke but, this joke soon seemed necessary. It’s not so easy to introduce a new military branch though. It has to be approved by White House representatives and the Pentagon must agree to incorporate it. Trump has some support from White House representatives, but the Pentagon is skeptical about the idea of an army in space. The Pentagon is doubtful because we have not found a threat in space yet and the military would need to create a completely different training program for those who want to join. All of which would cost plenty of tax dollars. Trump responds by saying that Russia and China are already ahead of us in space technology and imagines that future wars will occur in space. This idea is not something new, in Russia, there was a Space Force from 1992 to 1997, but it disbanded and they created a new one in 2001 which ended shortly thereafter.
However, a possible Space Force seems years away and is still being debated amongst the government. Currently, Trump is talking about the concept of Space Force with White House representatives and the Chairman of House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Mike Rogers, seems optimistic,”I was honored to talk to President Trump about this critical initiative and appreciate his support on an issue that is so important to me and the safety and security of the United States”. What started as a joke has garnered national attention and serious consideration by the President and his supporters.
